Word of the Week: Neurectomy

Every week we will post a veterinary or equine related word or term and its meaning.

This week’s word is:

Neurectomy:

Cutting of nerves supplying sensation, this can be done to the nerves supplying the foot and often the proximal suspensory. Also known as de-nerving. Used as a treatment in cases of navicular disease and proximal suspensory desmitis. Extreme care must be taken especially in foot neurectomy as the horse no longer as sensation risks severe injury or solar penetration.
